On September 13, 2016, Andrea Thompson agreed to come to Sycamore High School and present a lesson regarding Teen Dating Violence to my Criminal Justice students. She presented the Power and Control Wheel so students have a better understanding of how power and control affects a relationship and how it is directly associated with dating violence. Through her presentation, students were able to better understand and recognize signs of dating violence. She had the students engaged in the lesson, ensuring the students understood each area of her presentation. Andrea has the ability to connect with teenagers and keeps the students involved throughout the presentation. It was obvious that students were impacted by her presentation by asking questions and through their continued interest to learn more about this topic.
I wanted to express thanks from all the BHG staff and our patients for your excellent presentation on Friday 9/9/16. Our facility’s primary purpose is to treatment Opioid Dependence. However, we realize that substance abuse is an iceberg effect with underlining issues that need to be addressed. Several of our patients have expressed a history or current struggle with domestic violence. Through your presentation many patients and several staff persons were able to benefit from the education you provided. We really appreciate you shedding light on this problem, offering plausible solutions, and talking about needed resources. You are welcome to return to our clinic at any time for further presentations. Thanks so much for the important work that you do!
Andrea Thompson has a great program. She came to speak to my high school juniors and seniors at Maplewood High School about domestic violence. Her presentation was relevant, realistic and on point. The students were engaged and asked sincere questions. Even after she had gone I still had students asking for more information about her community events. It was a great pleasure to have Ms. Thompson, I am sure her program will continue to be an asset to this community for many more years to come!!!
I met Andrea through a women’s workshop held at Second Missionary Baptist Church in March 2016. During this work shop, Andrea was able to speak about her past personal experiences with domestic violence which made a big impact on the women at the workshop. Everyone including myself was amazed and astonished with the strength and positive spirit that Andrea possessed as she told her story. We were all able to relate to Andrea’s story because we all had experienced domestic violence at some point in our lives. Andrea gave us the power to be open and honest with each other. We were able to accept the fact that domestic violence is real and we all need to open our eyes in an effort of stopping domestic violence.
Thank you for giving me an opportunity to share my experience with Andrea Thompson. She is a true advocate for domestic violence victims. She uses her own life experiences to teach, educate, and empowered women.
I am so proud of Andrea Thompson and the work she is doing in the community. The presentation she did for National Hook Up of Black Women (NHBW) was so authentic. It was masterfully done!!! Her sincerity and personal testimonies just grabs at your heartstring, and yet she has enough poise and discipline to convey expertise and how to help other women in similar circumstances. Andrea is survivor and a wonderful role model for women of starting over and doing it with an enthusiasm for life. Andrea will succeed in whatever she does – She is a winner!!!
Andrea presented to our Stephen Ministries, one of the caring ministries of our congregation. She was dynamic, thorough and engaging. She communicated her passion for the issue effectively and her deep knowledge was clearly evident. Andrea’s discussion with our group was so effective and helpful, the group requested a follow-up discussion. We view Andrea as a great resource for our group and will look forward to having her spend time with us on a regular basis.
I met Andrea at a community event, where we both were guest speakers. As she began to speak and share her testimony, it astonished me. I quickly noticed that this women was brave, courageous, and strong. Her speech compelled me to connect with her. At that moment, I know she would be the perfect speaker at Athletes Can’s “Girl Talk Hoop Summit”. This event’s goal was to empower high school girls that were student athletes. We wanted to empower them to become better on the basketball court, as well as becoming better women. Andrea headed our session “Drugs and Sex Education”. Andrea’s delivery tone made the young ladies relax and attentive to every word that came out of her mouth. She spoke as in a calm, passionate way that these young women were not only educated on sexual education, but they were informed, and empowered by Andrea’s speech. She is turning her life lessons into a beautiful tool that edifies every single one of her audience members, male or female.
Andrea Thompson was a phenomenal speaker for Compass Intervention Center’s “Trauma Informed Care for TN Lives” conference in July 2016. We were actively seeking out individuals who had lived through a trauma and who would be willing to share about that and how they recovered. Ms. Thompson agreed to be part of our panel and spoke very eloquently about her story surviving domestic violence. She was engaging, dynamic, and inspirational. We received a lot of positive feedback about her presentation and we are very grateful that she agreed to partner with us for this important event. I have no doubt that many clinicians and other mental health professionals walked away with valuable information about the firsthand experiences of trauma. We would love to have Andrea back for future trauma-related events.
